2019 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT RESIDENCY

HMD’s Bridge Project is pleased to announce the three 2019-20 Community Engagement Residency lead artists/projects:

BIQTPOC Performing Artist Hive
The BIQTPOC Performing Artist Hive is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was initiated by randy reyes with support from Daria Garina in the Winter of 2018. We strive to rotate leadership, and a partial list of our members includes jose e. Abad, Europa Grace, Javier Stell-Frésquez, Stephanie Hewett, Zoe Huey, Gabriel Christian, Beatriz Escobar, India Davis, Clarissa Dyas, Nicole Maimon, Dongyi Wu, Chibueze Crouch, Audrey Johnson, and Anna Xu.

BIQTPOC Performing Artist Hive envisions and ignites a multi-modal/multi-dimensional thriving ecosystem of BIQTPOC performing artists in the San Francisco Bay Area through nurturing relationships, sharing resources, and building power among Black, Indigenous, queer and trans artists of color. We intend to create spaces that invite and center - dialogue, generative dissonance, embodied practices, slowing down, rest, reconnection with the earth and its local Indigenous stewards, bending time, dreaming, honing intuition and imagination, seeing the stars. Together we find wholeness, weave interdependence, learn how to heal. We create access / cultural equity and our own representation as we develop the infrastructure to carry our werq forward long-term. We practice mutuality and accountability. This statement too will change as leadership circulates and evolves. We acknowledge that the intelligence and strength of our collective are greater than any one of its parts, and those attributes come from alchemizing our respective gifts through and beyond the intersections of our differences / ancestral lineages. We gather and from there see what wants to happen.

Aesthetic Shift - A Dance Lab for Equitable Practices
Yayoi Kambara will lead Aesthetic Shift - A Dance Lab for Equitable Practices, a year-long engagement with a small group of artists including dance educators, social justice advocates, dancers, and choreographers. The group will focus on developing physical practices that align with the artists’ cultural equity values. This will be a year of embodied research with a focus on creating space for our bodies and others that supports equity, inclusion, and artistic values. Some questions this group will ask are: How do we unlearn externally-imposed aesthetics (learned dance lineages) ingrained in our body in order to access authentic physical vocabulary and creative practice that aligns with equity values? How can we transmit our authentic vocabulary and values to collaborators? How do we align physical language and cultural values?

In addition to studio-based work, Kambara’s residency will include writing and public engagement components. The artist cohort will generate and publish cultural values and mission statements for their work, and co-produce, with HMD, a series of public engagements including workshops and studio showings.

Yayoi Kambara directs KAMBARA + . She was part of the artistic leadership with AXIS Dance Company during Judith Smith’s Sabbatical at AXIS Dance Company in 2015, and currently, directs KAMBARA + DANCERS. From 2003-2015, she was a full-time company member with ODC/Dance. Kambara is part of the 4th cohort of Association of Performing Arts Professionals Leadership Fellows Program co-directed by Ken Foster and Krista Bradley. When she is not busy making work of her dancers, Kambara curates dance performances for the Asian Art Museum, and choreographs for contemporary opera.

LatinXtensions : Latinx Choreographic Mentorship Program
LatinXtensions will be a mentorship and networking program led by choreographer & director David Herrera of David Herrera Performance Company. The 12-month program is designed with the purpose of advising 3-4 emerging Latinx dance artists (mentees) on ways to develop their professional artistic voices, work, and long-term career goals.  For more information visit https://www.dhperformance.org/.

David Herrera is a choreographer, dancer, and producer. He grew up in Hollywood, CA, influenced by the movie industry alongside the cultural eclecticism within his neighborhood and his Mexican/American heritage. He holds B.A.s in American Studies & Theater Arts from UC Santa Cruz and a Graduate Certificate in theater. Upon graduating, David headed to Los Angeles where he danced professionally. In 2004 he relocated to San Francisco and launched David Herrera Performance Company in 2007.   David & DHPCo. have been commissioned by ODC Theater, UC Santa Cruz, Yerba Buena Gardens (SF), William Sonoma, Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers, PUSH Dance Company, Novato School of the Arts, and FWD.US for their Immigration Heritage Celebration. Additionally, they have gained support by the Puffin Foundation Grant, Zellerbach Family Foundation Community Arts Grant, Sales Force Champion Grant & residencies at The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, Z Space, Studio 210, Kunst-Stoff Arts, Safehouse Arts, and most currently HMD's Community Engagement Residency.  David recently served as a cohort of “Dance Around Race,” led by choreographer Gerald Casel, with a focus on furthering cultural equity in dance. He currently serves as an advisor for the Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers in San Francisco.
